Accommodations

Sails & Rig

Avalon Bay is configured as a cutter-rigged ketch, giving her a versatile sail plan well suited to offshore cruising and short-handed sailing. The Whitby 42 was offered in several configurations, including the double-headsail ketch arrangement. Ted Brewer himself preferred the term “double-headsail ketch” to cutter ketch.

All sails were replaced in 2010 and have seen minimal use since.

The Whitby 42

Designed by renowned Canadian naval architect Ted Brewer, the Whitby 42 was conceived as a capable long-distance cruising yacht that could also serve comfortably as a liveaboard. With a 42-foot overall length, 13-foot beam, long keel and substantial displacement, she offers the combination of stability, storage and interior volume that has made the design a respected cruising platform for decades.

The original Canadian-built Whitby 42s were constructed at Whitby Boat Works in Ontario, with the early boats forming the foundation of what became a well-known cruising yacht. The model was offered in several configurations, including ketch and double-headsail ketch arrangements.

Avalon Bay represents a particularly well-developed example. She combines the proven characteristics of the original Whitby 42 with decades of thoughtful upgrades, extensive cruising equipment and a level of spare parts and onboard resources rarely found aboard a brokerage yacht.
