Black & Yellow

The 2016 Cutwater C-24 Black & Yellow is a trailerable fiberglass sport cruiser built by Fluid Motion in Washington state. It blends classic Downeast-inspired lines with a modern double-stepped hull. The 220 hp Volvo diesel was an optional upgrade over the standard 240 hp Volvo gasoline Duoprop sterndrive.

The diesel version is relatively uncommon and was marketed for reliability, fuel efficiency, and extended-range cruising with a larger 125 gallon fuel tank. This version includes a bow thruster.

The Cutwater C-24 is powerful, beautiful, and innovative.  The compound-curved bonded windshield and double-stepped hull featuring patented LFI (Laminar Flow Interrupter) technology sets the tone for the design.

A gracefully designed hull incorporates a full bow with low aft sides and a deep cockpit. This combination maximizes performance, safety, interior space, and comfort. The sleek profile turns heads. Inside, an opening aft bulkhead and reversible dinette seat provide additional cockpit seating and invite the outside in. Opening transparent roof hatches and sliding side windows bring in light. The interior features maple and cherry cabinetry and shelving in the galley and private forward stateroom, plus heavy-gauge Sunbrella fabrics and aircraft-style indirect LED lighting.

Cutwater emphasized versatility for coastal cruising, fishing, watersports, and weekend getaways on a trailerable 8’6″ beam platform, with more standard features than many competitors.

Black & Yellow is turnkey ready for fishing and cruising the waters around Vancouver Island.

Engines

220 hp Volvo Penta Diesel:

  • Model: Volvo Penta D3-220 (inline 5-cylinder, 2.4L turbo-diesel with common-rail injection)
  • Rated Power: 220 hp (162 kW) at 4,000 rpm (crankshaft); ~209–213 hp at propeller shaft
  • Drive: Volvo Penta DPS Aquamatic DuoProp sterndrive
  • Torque: Peak around 464 Nm at 2,500 rpm
  • Fuel Type: Diesel
  • Notable Traits: Aluminum block for lighter weight, strong low-end torque for planing, electronic controls, NMEA 2000 integration. Marketed as sipping fuel for longer excursions compared with the gasoline option.

Comparable Volvo D3-220 installations in similar-sized boats typically cruise efficiently in the mid-teens to low-20s knots range, with the diesel praised for economy at displacement and mid-cruise speeds. Owners of related Cutwater/Ranger Tug models with the D3-220 often report comfortable cruising around 14–18 mph with good fuel burn.

Engine RPM context (Volvo Penta D3-220):

  • Rated WOT: 4,000 rpm (Volvo also lists a brief maximum around 4,130 rpm).
  • Typical guidance for this engine on Fluid Motion boats: keep extended cruise at or below about 3,600 rpm(roughly 90% of rated WOT). Short bursts higher are acceptable.

Exact RPM-vs-speed tables for the C-24 hull + D3-220 were not published the way Yamaha later published outboard performance bulletins. Closest real-world owner data is from similar stepped-hull Cutwaters with the same D3-220 (mostly C-26s, which are heavier):

  • RPM (approx.)
  • Speed on C-26 D3-220

Notes:

  • ~2,200–2,250
  • ~7 knots

Displacement / low-speed cruise:

  • ~3,220–3,380
  • ~10.5–14 mph

Common economical cruise:

  • ~3,500–3,600
  • ~13.5–18 mph

Faster cruise; often cited as practical max continuous:

  • ~4,000–4,120
  • ~20–23 mph

WOT on the heavier C-26.

The lighter C-24 (about 5,300 lbs dry vs. a heavier C-26) should be faster at the same rpm, which is consistent with the published 26 mph cruise / 40.4 mph top for the diesel I/O C-24.

Practical takeaway for the 220 hp diesel C-24

  • Comfortable / efficient cruise: mid-teens to low-20s mph, typically in the 3,300–3,600 rpm band.
  • Published cruise number: 26 mph.
  • Top speed: about 40 mph (40.4 mph published).
  • Fuel burn on related D3-220 installations is often in the 8–10 gph range at those mid-cruise rpm settings, but load, bottom condition, prop, and sea state change the numbers a lot.

Yamaha 9.9 kicker for trolling and back up needs.

Hull Design

Performance Features:

  • 24° deep-V forward for a smooth ride
  • 11° keel pad for planing stability
  • Reversed chines for quick planing and reduced cornering roll
  • Double-stepped hull for efficiency, reduced fuel use, and faster time-to-plane
  • Patented Laminar Flow Interrupters (LFI) for positive, stable cornering
  • Electric trim tabs

The design aims for a quiet, soft ride and good handling in a compact package.

Accommodations

Layout:

Typical 2016 Coupe/Cruiser layout sleeps 4:

  • Private forward stateroom with wrap-around seating and high/low table that converts to an oversized double berth
  • Mid-cabin/salon dinette that seats 4 and converts to a berth
  • Enclosed head with marine toilet, sink, and shower area
  • Galley with refrigerator, microwave, stove/cooktop, and sink
  • Opening aft bulkhead with reversible seat that faces the cockpit
  • Good headroom (around 6’2″–6’6″ in cabin areas)

Three dining/social areas are often noted: forward, mid-cabin, and cockpit.

Features and Equipment

Standard/common on 2016 models:

  • Garmin navigation package (chartplotter/GPS/sonar)
  • VHF radio
  • Fusion stereo system
  • LED lighting (including indirect cabin lighting)
  • Marine head with holding tank and pump-out
  • Bow pulpit and swim platform with boarding ladder
  • Windlass (bow and helm controls on many boats)
  • Bow thruster
  • Rod holders and sport racks
  • Cockpit sink and drink holders
  • Opening portlights and hatches
  • Self-bailing cockpit
  • Anchor package (chain + line)
  • Inverter
  • Macerator discharge
  • Underwater lights
  • Air conditioning / reverse-cycle heat or diesel heater
  • Radar
  • Trailer (tandem-axle)
  • Yamaha 9.9 hp kicker on some boats
  • Engine heat exchanger use for cabin heat

Cutwater loaded these boats with more factory-standard items than many similarly sized cruisers of the era.
