Twin Diesels • Extensive Refit • Boathouse Kept
HONU II is a beautifully preserved 1968 Grenfell 40 and a rare example of classic West Coast Canadian yacht building. She combines traditional craftsmanship with decades of thoughtful modernization. Major refits in 1983, 1993 and 1999 included a diesel repower, interior improvements, extensive structural restoration, refastening, new decks and a new house. Approximately $100,000 was invested in the 1999 refit alone.
Today, HONU II presents exceptionally well. Her twin Volvo TAMD 40B diesels have approximately 1,915 hours each since their 1983 repower, and she has been professionally maintained and boathouse kept. With a generous 13′ 5″ beam, full-beam aft cabin, two heads, dedicated shower, generator, inverter, shore power, solar array, substantial battery capacity and diesel heating, she offers the space and systems needed for comfortable extended cruising or liveaboard use.
The pilothouse is one of her most distinctive features, with excellent visibility and a large sliding sunroof that gives it more of a classic sports car feel than a conventional flying bridge. Large salon windows fill the interior with natural light, while the covered aft teak deck provides a wonderful space to relax and entertain.
A 45′ boathouse is also available with the vessel, making HONU II an exceptional opportunity for someone looking for a beautifully maintained classic yacht with a protected home and ready access to the Salish Sea, Desolation Sound and the Broughtons.

HONU II has a remarkably spacious interior for a 40-foot yacht, with her generous beam providing excellent living space throughout.
Large windows throughout the salon bring in an abundance of natural light and give the interior an open, welcoming feel. The main salon features beautiful woodwork and four comfortable chairs, making it an inviting space for relaxing or entertaining. Modern cellular pull-down blinds offer shade and privacy when needed.

Both heads are equipped with electric toilets.
The sanitary system includes:
The pilothouse is one of HONU II’s most distinctive spaces.
The helm has the feel of a classic sports car with a large sunroof, rather than a traditional flying bridge. The large sliding sunroof brings light and fresh air into the helm while retaining the protection and comfort of an enclosed pilothouse.
The helm provides great visibility and a comfortable command position for cruising.
The galley is located on the pilothouse deck and opens through double doors onto the covered aft teak deck.
Galley equipment includes:
The layout works particularly well for entertaining, with the galley, salon and aft deck all connected.
The covered aft teak deck is one of the boat’s most enjoyable spaces.
It provides a comfortable sheltered area for:
The aft deck provides excellent views and makes particularly good use of HONU II’s generous beam and classic aft-cabin layout.
Twin Volvo Penta TAMD 40B Diesels
The diesel repower was completed in 1983, making the propulsion system substantially newer than the original 1968 gas engines.
Additional mechanical equipment includes:
HONU II has a well-developed electrical system suitable for extended cruising and comfortable time aboard.
The 385W solar array provides a useful source of additional electrical power at anchor and can reduce the need to run the generator or main engines simply to maintain the house bank.
HONU II is a traditionally constructed Grenfell wooden yacht with beautiful classic lines and substantial construction.
Her hull construction includes:
As part of her extensive restoration in 1999, the hull sides were stripped to clean wood and re-plugged, followed by a multi-coat high-build primer and two-part finish system.
The cabin sides were permanently sealed against moisture and movement using West System epoxy, followed by multiple coats of two-part clear finish for UV protection.
The cabin tops were rebuilt with marine plywood sheathing, fibreglass and a two-part finish system.
The decks are glued teak rather than mechanically fastened with deck screws, reducing the potential for fastener-related leaks into the underlying structure.
A substantial amount of HONU II is newer than 1968.
1983
Major mechanical refit and diesel repower
1993
Interior refit
1999
Major structural and exterior refit.
Approximately $100,000 was spent at the time on an extensive Dave Richardson/Abernethy & Gaudin refit, including:
The boat was taken down extensively as part of the process, with access to the structure and machinery carefully considered for future maintenance.
HONU II offers an unusual combination that is increasingly difficult to find:
Classic Canadian craftsmanship specifically built for the Pacific Northwest + extensive structural restoration + twin diesels + modern systems + exceptional care.
She has the warmth and character of a hand-built wooden yacht, while many of the concerns normally associated with an older wooden boat have already been addressed through decades of professional maintenance and major refits.
The generous 13′ 5″ beam creates exceptional interior volume. The full-beam aft cabin, two heads, dedicated shower, generator, inverter, solar power, substantial battery capacity, diesel heating and shore power make her genuinely practical for extended stays aboard.
For cruising the Salish Sea, Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound and the Broughtons, HONU II offers a comfortable and distinctive platform. With her excellent maintenance history and extensive refit record, she is ready for a new owner to enjoy rather than undertake a major restoration.
And for those looking for something more permanent, the 45′ boathouse is also available for purchase with the vessel, offering an exceptional opportunity to keep this classic yacht protected and ready to cruise.
HONU II is a rare Grenfell with an unusually strong history of investment, professional care and thoughtful modernization. She has a presence that is difficult to appreciate in photographs alone, presents exceptionally well, and deserves to be seen in person.
