Emma B
Apart from a very high quality build, what does this Helmsman 31, most Kadey Krogen 39’s and most Nordhavn 40’s have in common? They are all powered by the John Deere 4045 industrial diesel. The knowledge owner spec’d the boat to be dependable, economical and self sufficient in the remote places he favours cruising.Of note to Canadian purchasers, the 9.5% duty has been paid on Emma B. That is a huge savings.Helmsman acquired the tooling for the legendary Camano, retained the exact hull, modernized the cabin look with curved windows and a radar arch, then completely redesigned and up graded the interior. The new “galley up” layout is brighter, has a large fridge-separate freezer, 3 burner stove with large oven and corian countertop. Extra storage is available in the upper “drop down” cabinets which also include a Samsung Smart TV. The design allows full view and brightness from the windows while the cabinets are “up”. Wooden blinds allow privacy while docked.
The Center Forward window tips open for excellent ventilation in combination with the sliding windows at the forward seating and the round opening port to stern. The dinette boasts a beautiful drop down table with inlaid compass rose. This easily converts to a second double berth. Unlike the original, the redesign has 2 forward facing seats so a couple can both sit up and look forward underway. All seating was ordered in tan coloured leather on Emma B. It should be noted that the floor is solid teak and holley, NOT a plywood veneer as typically used.Going below one is surprised by the comfort of the master cabin. A step up queen sized bunk complete with multiple cabinets for clothing, a large drawer, very good sized cedar lined hanging locker and great ventilation. To starboard is a nice sized head complete with vacu flush toilet and corian countertop on the vanity. There is an optional wall mounted medicine cabinet as well. To Port is a separate shower which would be the envy of much larger vessels. True luxury for a couple on a boat this size.
Up on the flybridge are 3 forward facing fully adjustable seats and good storage under the steering console. The radar arch keeps floor space to maximum and there is room for a lounge chair or 2.
The covered aft cockpit is a great place to barbecue or sit and enjoy a sundowner, all the while sheltered from the sun, wind or rain if anchored.Of note while comparing Emma B to the pre Helmsman Camano’s is the increased tankage. Fuel at 150 gallons, water at 100 and waste at 30 gallons are far larger, allowing more extended cruising.

Owner - Vessel Ordered Changes/Additions (over and above standard items)
-
Upgrade to John Deere 4045TFM85 125hp industrial engine. This engine is a very low rpm diesel that has a “M2” rating (full power 16 of 24 hours with 3-5000 hours per year use) and weighs close to 50% more than the standard engine offering or the volvo also offered. This is a long lasting commercial work horse that with routine maintenance, will give much longer service than most. This engine was a $6000 USA funds upgrade and will have approximately 950 hours at haul out with a fresh oil change.
-
165 watt solar panel with adjustable mount that allows tipping forward or aft for better efficiency in morning or evening
-
Blue sky MPPT solar charge controller. Extremely efficient
-
24” Samsung smart tv with mount
-
3 additional fenders (6 total)
-
35lb Delta anchor with 75 ft of chain and 150ft of rode (more chain, superior anchor)
-
Over and above the Webasto diesel furnace, the owner had the factory install a “bus heater” that works off engine coolant while underway. He had the factory run it up to 3 window defroster outlets at the helm. Works extremely well in early or later season mornings.
-
A small pressure tank was installed so the pressure pump doesn’t run as often.
-
A coloured hull was also spec’d and as you can see, Emma B draws compliments wherever she goes.
-
Electronics are a garmin plotter, Icom AIS VHF, raymarine auto pilot and Raymarine radar at lower helm complete with another Garmin plotter, radar and autohelm at the upper helm. Of note, the autohelm controls were spec’d with rudder angle indicator, a very useful tool docking etc
-
The engine has been serviced regularly with a complete “once over” by a mechanic in Nov/20, shaft alignment checked and adjusted as well as new house batteries installed at that time as well.
-
Of note is a spare prop, basically a $2000 backup in the event of an accident in the remote waters the boat cruised.
-
A Honda EU2000 “companion 30amp” generator. These have a 30amp receptacle so the boat plugs directly in with the shore power cord.
