The production C-28 MK II is a round bilge, moulded GRP sailing sloop with a raked stem, fin winged keel and sugar scoop transom stern. In 1995 the Catalina 28 underwent a design upgrade and was built until 2010. A flush foredeck runs aft to a raised main cabin trunk. There is an escape hatch on the foredeck with windows port, starboard and foreword on the cabin trunk giving good light below while maintaining a strong deck structure. There is a large sliding main hatch into the cabin. The good sized cockpit is well laid out with wheel steering and full length seats over cockpit lockers port and starboard. At the stern there is a a sugar scoop transom with easy access from the cockpit with re-boarding ladder mounted. The bridge deck at the cabin entrance provides protection from down flooding with direct drainage aft to the transom. Below decks to port of the companion way is the head with galley to starboard. This is followed by the centerline dinette. The aft berth is a sizeable athwartship berth below the cockpit. The fore cabin with a “V” berth follows the dinette with escape hatch to the foredeck. The engine space is below the companionway stairs. A panel on the cabin sole gives access to the centre line bilge.

The Catalina 28 hull round bilge, light displacement sailboat of solid fibreglass construction with a cast lead fin keel. The hull is solid GRP, the decks and trunk cabin are a cored laminate of balsa with plywood reinforcements in way of deck fittings where required. The vessel was built in two sections, hull and deck. The top and bottom (hull and deck) are secured by means of a bonded “shoebox” joint with stainless steel screw fastenings through a full length external alloy rub rail. All bulkheads are well bonded and tabbed to the hull. In addition there is an internal fibreglass liner which forms the main structure of the interior. This design feature greatly adds to the rigidity of the hull. The hull above the waterline is insulated in all the main cabin and the V berth, the remainder of the hull is exposed fibreglass.
