Simply, a distinctive and classy yacht that has withstood the test of time. This is my personal impression of the Grand Banks 32 Sumu. With over 860 hulls over a 30-year span, the Grand Banks 32 is a proven deep-water cruiser, that can voyage to many landfalls in comfort and safety. A definite cute-as-a-button small cruiser that still turns heads where ever she goes.
Back in the 1960’s American Marine, based out of Singapore, developed a distinctive design trademark based on the classic traditions of Bill Garden, Nat Herreshoff, and Sparkman and Stephens. If a boat looks right, why mess with it?
Why Should You Buy This Boat?
With a 17,000 lbs displacement fiberglass hull, including a hard chine and long keel, stability and seaworthiness is one of the GB 32’s hallmarks. Combined with teak joinery above and below decks (over 1″ thick), the owners are surrounded with quality craftsmanship that is a pleasure to own and to share with guests. Even the raised bulwarks add an extra level of safety and distinction.
The first thing you notice when you walk onboard is a teak sole and deck. You can leave the teak natural grey, or oil it to a lustered finish. Besides, it will give you another reason to come down to Sumu. All it takes is just 2-3 coats and couple of old shirts.
Though Sumu is considered a Classic, her solid design and construction has proved that she is still quite capable of doing memorable landfalls. And Grand Bands are still sought after in today’s market.
Dependable Ford Lehman Diesel
These engines have been around for decades and are proven performers in many yacht designs. Grand Banks wanted a Diesel powerplant that is dependable, low maintenance and fuel efficient, to the point that one economical fill-up would do your boating season.
With a cruising speed shy of 8 knots, you have a conservative 1500 nautical mile range on one tank. Where does this bring you? From Victoria, BC, a double circumnavigation around Vancouver Island (in case you missed something); a one-way ticket to Anchorage, Alaska; or a season’s worth of Seattle Seahawks and Mariners games.
Sumu is equipped with nice accents that the owner has taken pride in, to make a weekend feel like a vacation. With an Espar heating system, your cruising calendar is expanded by being a few degrees warmer in comfort into the fall. The aft deck has a hard roof extending from the sky bridge, providing shade on those sunny days, which can do double duty to store kayaks and crab traps. Further, two nautical folding deck chairs set off the mood, coming off a Grand Banks 42, can do double duty inside the main cabin. Lastly, a tender to go ashore while anchored, is always appreciated as well.
Being a small cruiser, the amount of natural light bellies its size. A bright and airy interior will undoubtably be pleasing even on rainy or foggy days. From galley to table, everything is where it should be, with ample storage for extended journeys.
Pride of Ownership
Like any yacht, preventive maintenance is key to longevity. When the iron fuel tanks needed replacement with aluminum, it required engine removal. At the same time the following components were also replaced: fuel system (tanks, fuel filters, gauge, fuel lines), exhaust, sea strainer and salt water cooling hoses, house batteries, engine mounts, waterless stuffing box, zinc saver and new transducer for second sounder. This hard work alone has not only increased the lifespan of Sumu’s key mechanical components, but places peace of mind to the new owner as well. Sumu is only 45 years young, and is willing and capable to please.
1974 Grand Banks Classic 32 – Sumu – is a displacement hull trawler design with a white hull and black antifouling paint below the waterline. It is constructed of moulded fibreglass. The deck superstructure is white. There is a foredeck with windlass followed by a hatch over the forward state room. Deep side decks lead aft to an open cockpit at the stern with access to an outside helm on the fly bridge. The length is 32 feet with a beam of 11 and a half feet. The displacement is approximately 17,000 pounds. Propulsion is a 1974 Ford Lehman in-line marine diesel. Sumu has a teak swim grid attached to the transom. Davits are attached to the transom which support a fibreglass Livingston tender on brackets.
From the main saloon stairs go down to the forward V birth with head with shower to starboard and hanging lockers to port and overhead deck hatch. The main saloon has the galley to port (amidship) and the helm to starboard. Aft of the helm is an L shaped settee with table. There are two chairs on port side along with storage drawers. A door leads aft to the cockpit and fly bridge stairs.
Well appointed with teak and teak accents. An Espar diesel heat system. A very cozy and welcoming yacht.
The galley is mid port side. A good space with ample storage, stainless steel sink, hot and cold water, Shipmate LPG 4 burner LPG stove with oven. A Norcold dual voltage 12 VDC/120 VAC.

Teak side decks
Sumu’s engine is a 1974 6 cylinder Ford Lehman 120 HP diesel – Model #2715E. Engine hours are 3,478.2 hours on the original hour meter and 58.4 hours on a new replacement hour meter. Total engine hours 3,536.6. Fresh/seawater cooled with heat exchanger.
Warner Velvet direct drive Model ASE-71C. Ratio 2.10:1, 11/2 inch propeller shaft with PSS shaft seal and a 4 blade 24LH 14 bronze propeller.
The fuel system and fuel tanks were replaced in 2012.
